Guruji’s Punya Tithi

Sunday, April 28

Twenty-five years ago on April 22, 1994 – Guruji left for devlok. Guruji influenced many in different walks of life and changed the course of modern Jain history in significant ways. He definitively laid foundations of Jain studies, research, practice and faith outside India in our times, and gave those within India an enlightened way to appreciate and cherish the key principles of Jain thought and practice, free from narrow confines of sect or dogma.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of his demise, you might find it useful to peruse through our website to read more about Guruji and Siddhachalam or visit the ashram and its library.

Remembering Guruji

June 14-16, 2019

Siddhachalam invites all from all parts of the world to come together at the ashram from June 14 through 16, 2019 to remember Guruji and share our personal experiences with him. 2019 marks 25 years since his devlok and June 15 is his birth anniversary.

Guruji was one of the most revered spiritual leaders of 20th century India. In the national celebrations commemorating 2,500 years of Bhagwaan Mahavira’s moksha, he announced that he will be breaking the taboo on travel of monks by use of mechanical means. Bhagwaan Mahavira had used boat at least 17 times to cross Ganga. India’s ancient history contains examples of Sraman monks traveling to far off lands at the time of Bhagwaan Parsvnath and Mahavira Swami and thereafter. Yet, his decision was unprecedented in at least a millennium.

On June 17, 1975, Guruji traveled outside India. Some years later, he founded Siddhachalam in Blairstown, NJ and established here an ashram for all who wanted to follow the path of ahimsa and anekantvad and sought self-realization. Soon, Siddhachalam came to be regarded as the first Jain tirth outside India.

On June 14-15-16, 2019, we will reminiscence about Guruji. Guruji left a lasting impact on anyone he met. Many among us have been blessed to have personal stories with him. We urge them – where ever they are – to congregate at his ashram during these dates. Let us come together to celebrate the life of the great soul we lovingly call Guruji.

Please let us know of your travel plans by email to ask@siddhachalam.org
