Visiting Monks and Scholars


One of the characteristic of a Tirth is that sadhu and sadhvijis can freely visit it and stay there without hesitation. Siddhachalam has, subject to certain restrictions, followed this tradition over the years. It has hosted tens of sadhus and sadhvijis. It has also tried to follow a similar policy for scholars of Jainism and monks of other religious faiths.

Siddhachalam periodically invites sadhus, sadhvijis and scholars for temporary stay. It has a dedicated building (called “sthanak”) for the stay of monks. It has another dedicated residence for sadhvijis.

In 2009, Siddhachalam has hosted or will host the following sadhus and scholars, among others:

Michael Tobias, Director of 'Ahimsa' Film

Michael Tobias, a practising Jain and a vegan, is an extra-ordinarily gifted and learned person. He has authored more than 30 books and written, directed or produced over 100 films on environment, animal rights, religion, peace, science and cultural issues. His book on Jain Dharma - Life Force (which we will request him to sign for those interested) - and his film - Ahimsa - has had a profound influence on many of us.

Michael is also well-known as an ecologist, anthropologist, historian, explorer, teacher, and activist. His works reflect his deep learning, transcultural understanding, inter-disciplinary perspectives, and his boundless empathy for all living beings.

Michael obtained his Ph.D. in the Department of History of Consciousness from the University of California-Santa Cruz. He was an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies & Adjunct Assistant Professor of English and the Humanities at Dartmouth College, an Associate Professor of Humanities at California State University-Northridge, the Garrey Carruthers Chair of Honors and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque, and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Environmental Studies and Regents' Lecturer, at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Michael has traveled to over 80 countries in the course of his research, films and books. His interdisciplinary approach to environmental history, animal rights, scientific, ethical and philosophical frameworks for policy work, demographic analysis, ecological anthropology, biodiversity conservation, and non-violence activism, has won him critical acclaim and recognition. In 1996, Tobias received the "Courage of Conscience Award" for his commitment to nature and non-violence. In 2004, he was the recipient of the Parabola Focus Award for his long-standing body of work aimed at creating a better world.

Acharya Roop Chandji Maharaj, Manav Mandir, New Delhi.

Acharya Roop Chandji Maharaj is a monk of many qualities. He is a linguist, scholar, author, teacher, and a leader in providing care and education to destitute children. He has been a frequent invitee of Siddhachalam and his thoughts and guidance on how to lead a simple, purposeful life has won him admirers in the United States.

Muni Amrender ji Maharaj, Shri Shukal Adhyatmik Kendra, Rohini, Delhi.

Muni Amrender ji Maharaj is a monk based in Delhi who periodically visits the U.S. He accompanied Acharya Sushil Kumarji Maharaj ("Guruji") in some of Gurujis visits to and stay in the U.S. and regards Guruji has his spiritual leader. Muniji is a scholar on Jain and Buddhist studies and is a master of yoga.

Shanti Parakh, Shanti Yoga, Toronto.

Shanti ji is an internationally acclaimed yoga teacher and disciple of Guruji. He often gave yoga lessons alongside Guruji. Shantiji is often consulted by people suffering from various ailments because of his uncanny skill in diagnosing and resolving health issues. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Shantiji chose a life dedicated to yoga early in his life and continues to teach yoga and self-discipline to innumerable students in Canada, U.S. and elsewhere.
