On 6 March, the Office of the SRSG, along with UN Academic Impact and The Enough Project, is organizing an event around conflict minerals and its linkages with sexual violence.  The Enough Project’s “Raise Hope for Congo” campaign, has done a fantastic job in ranking companies http://www.raisehopeforcongo.org/companyrankings and has already convinced 50 universities to not source products from tech. companies that have not done enough to prevent the use of conflict minerals in their products. The event will consist of a pre-discussion segment and later a  panel composed of SRSG Zainab Bangura, Enough Project Founder John Prendergast, US Ambassador to the UN and Actress Robin Wright (House of Cards and Forest Gump). (detailed agenda to follow later)

After the event, The Enough Project and OSRSG-SVC will sign a joint communique with a number of tech and jewellery companies, as a means of seeking  concrete commitments. Deloitte has kindly agreed to be a subject matter advisor on conflict minerals, and will be leading a workshop earlier in the day with attendance from UN Member States and representatives from the corporate sector.

Additionally, we hope that a number of universities, in particular those on the East Coast, will sign up to be part of the “Conflict Free Campus Initiative.”  I am attaching a couple of resources that will provide you additional information. Either you or your students can take the lead in helping your university sign up. Please feel free to contact Mr.  Suhail Khan (khan30@un.org/ 917-367-1061) with any questions or suggestions. This is a great opportunity to collaborate and partner with the Office of the Special Representative and the UN.
